16by16 and Hot Wire Extension Collaborate to Make Lagos Light Series at Lagos Design Week
Hot Wire Extension, a Switzerland design studio (led by designer & material researcher, Fabio Hendry) and 16by16 (a design-focused boutique incubator, hotel and private gathering space), have collaborated together in exploring the potential of polyethylene — an ever-present material present in Lagos and used in pure water sachets and other plastic products.
The Lagos Light Series is the product of a month-long residency program. Fabio’s interest in disruptive approaches in industrial manufacturing led him to pioneer research in materials which led him to create a proprietary process repurposing waste nylon powder from SLS 3D printing.
For Tushar Hathiramani — founder of 16by16, notions of materialism, conscious production and waste were at the forefront of his mind when this collaborative project was in view. Much field research highlighted a supply of recycled polyethene from a pure water bag-making factory in Lagos.
Using Hot Wire Extension’s unique method of combining sand and waste polyethene, the duo created 2 objects to commemorate Lagos Light I and II. The Lagos Light Series are in 3 unique colours — neutral, lime green and Danfo yellow.
The Series of Light is available in 2 sizes, they have sculptural organic forms that are reminiscent of vines growing around a tree, which makes it easy to forget they are made of plastic.
