Chicago’s museums are can’t miss destinations.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or a local looking for what to do on your day off, heading to one of the museums in the city is something to do to brighten your day.

Most of these museums will be open for limited hours and have a limited amount of visitors as lockdown is gradually been eased. Without further ado, let’s take a quick dive.

  1. Shedd Aquarium

This indoor aquarium is the largest indoor facility in the world. It also contains 1,500 species including fish, amphibians, snakes, birds and marine mammals.

The aquarium boasts of seven permanent exhibits which makes it easy to spend an entire day at the Shedd.

Know before you go: The Shedd will be opened to members from January 27 to 29 and the general public beginning January 30. Tickets should be purchased in advance. Social distancing will be enforced in all galleries. Don’t forget to come along with your cameras and face masks.

2. Field Museum

A natural history museum in Chicago and one of the largest of such in the world, the Field Museum showcases everything from ancient cultures to the latest scientific discoveries.

Know before you go: The Field Museum is opening to the public on the 23rd of January and members-only on January 21st and 22nd. The Field is open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Only the East Entrance will be open. All visitors should bring their facemasks and follow the social distancing guidelines.

3. Art Institute of Chicago

One of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States, this museum hosts approximately 1.5 million people annually.

The Art Institute of Chicago is home to the greatest collection of impressionist paintings that spans centuries. Artworks of Renoir, Monet and Van Gogh can be seen in this institute. The institute has something for everyone.

Know before you go: The museum will open soon with special exhibits on the works of Bisa Butler and Monet. Advanced tickets will be required.

4. Museum of Contemporary Art

This museum is one of the world’s contemporary art venues. The museum aims to present works of emerging artists through live performances, lectures and debates.

Know before you go: The museum will be reopening on March 2 every day except Mondays. Head over to the site to get more details on on-going virtual events.

5. Illinois Holocaust Museum

This centre is recognized as the third-largest Holocaust museum in the world and it's dedicated to teaching universal lessons of the Holocaust. Travel throughout history as you explore life before, during and after the Holocaust.

Know before you go: This museum will be reopening on February 3 and will be open from 10 am to 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday.
