From Seoul to Vienna, take a look at design events this September.
Look around you. You are surrounded by the ideas conceived by creatives and carved out in the physical. The building you reside in, the cultural centres in your city or country, the nearby parks and whatever space humans inhabit. But have you ever wondered how they go about it, perhaps you’ve been itching to have an idea of their events? No need to worry, I got you covered.
In this article, I take you through a detailed path of architecture and design events that will be held this month. They will cut across interior designs, architecture, furniture and materials that will have an impact on our environment.
Get your pad and pen ready to jot some events that will catch your fancy. Let’s dive in.
1. 3 Days of Design, Copenhagen, Denmark.
It holds in Denmark annually as a festival to sensitize the general public and visitors to participate in showcases by some major creatives in Denmark. The event has concepts that cut across lifestyle, interior design, furniture and lighting. This year, 3daysofdesign is set to feature about 200 exhibitions. Products will be launched and it will also serve as a gettogether, where you can meet and engage some of the creatives about ideas behind their works or creations.
Last year’s theme, Alfredo Haeberli’s piece was featured as the 3daysofdesign theme. He is a designer based in Zurich and has worked with prestigious brands, such as, BMW, Alias, Georg Jensen, Camper, Moroso, Kvadrat, Vitra just to mention a few. Last year’s focus was centred on sustainability and how it affected the circular economy. Attendees were introduced to ideas that challenged the way they live with the design.
2019’s event theme was by Jaime Hayon, 2018 was by Henrik Vibskov, 2017 was by All The Way To Paris, 2016 was by GamFratesi, 2015 was by GamFratesi and 2014 was also by GamFratesi (a guy worth checking out).

2. London Design Festival.
As we prepare for the 19th edition of the London Design Festival, it’s important to note that the country has some of the world’s greatest designers that live and work there. Most of them come from all over and call
London home. How spectacular!
This year’s festival sets to bring new programmes through art and design in collaboration with local and international creatives. The chairman of the event, Sir John Sorrell, says ‘’he hopes this year’s festival will be seen by audiences around the world, not just by those in London alone.’’ The festival is scheduled across the city from 18–26 of September, 2021.
Projects that will be showcased include Medusa by Sou Fujimoto and Tin Drum, Bring London Together by Yinka Ilori, Mellifera: The Dancing Bee, The Unboxing Show by Peter Marigold; special projects to be showcased include The Cube by VELUX, Design London by Design London. 3. Detroit Month of Design
The city of Detroit is the only state to be listed as the United States’ UNESCO City of Design. It is an innovative city with the legacy of the automobile industry to the educational institutions like Cranbrook Art Academy and College for Creative Studies that boasts of a large pool of talents that accounts of a high concentration of talents each year.
No wonder design celebraton is a month long (runs through Septenber 30). Detroit’s designers are always on the lookout for some of the world’s pressing issues in their work. An example is seen with Mike Han, who is an artist; he is collaborating with an architecture firm Synecdoche Design and also a photographer Ryan Southern who are exploring the idea of reuse with a Midwestern twist. The focus of this year will be Detroit’s overlooked role as a national and global centre.
For the 11th edition, the city of Detroit plans to highlight the city’s unique community voice and also showcase its creativity.
4. Vienna Design Week
This happens to be Austria’s largest curated design festival and been celebrated since 2007. It was founded by Lilli Hollein, Tulga Beyerle and Thomas Geisler.
This year’s festival is set to take place from the 24th of September to the 3rd of October. It promises to be a ‘City Full of Design.’ This year’s event will showcase innovations and projects that act as an interdisciplinary endeavour where aesthetics, practical application and sociopolitics meet. 5. Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2021
The city of Seoul is one major representative of major contemporary metropolises and is relevant to host this international event.
The events and exhibitions that will be on display in this event will reflect the future of the urban environment and a mix of architectural and planning strategies that foster resilence.
Dominique Perrault serves as the General Director of the Seoul Biennale; this is the third edition and it is titled ‘CROSSROADS Building the Resilient City’ which continues exploring world cities.
The event will begin from the 16th of September all through the 31st of October with the first two days serving as an opening ceremony that talks about the future of cities, the issue of urban resilience when large- scale crises are confronted as well as what they have in store in the exhibition program.
6. Design Miami/ Basel
This year’s event will be the 15th edition of Design Miami/Basel and will be hosted by Aric Chen. This year’s theme is tagged HUMAN NATURE which will examine the relationship between humans and the construced world- an area that has been brought into stark focus over the past year. In this event, Chen asks us to examine what role design might play in response to the new reality; and how we might refrence to both the past and future to help us rethink interactions betweeb humans, nature and human nature.
About 40 galleries will be brought to the fair including Geoffrey Diner Gallery, AGO Projects, Morentz, LAFFANOUR-GAlerie Downtown, Jousse Enterprise among others. Also, Geneva-based artist, Bailly Gallery will be present to showcase works by Picasso and the Giacometti brothers in dialogue and the relationship between the artists and designers from the 1930s to WW2 and beyond will be investigated and represented.
The Reception House table and chairs by George Nakashima will also be on display at Geoffrey Diner Gallery.

7. France Design Week 2021
This second edition sets to provide a platform for all forms of French design to be showcased. Each of them will cater to a wide variety of audiences and at the same time connect people across the country.
It holds from 7th to 28th of September.
8. Hospitality Design Show
This is the United Kingdom’s leading event for the designs behind business growth. The show covers design trends, innovations and ideas that inspires the country’s creatives and the way they also keep their businesses at the height of style.
Its a free event (however, tickets can be gotten via the website) and is estimated to host about 3000 visitors and 500 exhibitors. It will hold at Excel, London on the 28th and 29th of September.
It connects hospitality professionals alongside buzzing industry creatives and also design solutions and tips that are transforming the hosptitality world. Speakers including Tim Theofanou, Patrick Apostolo, Jo Berrington, Max Fenlon among others will be present. Where else will you be on the 28th and 29th of this month?
