Interior design is an art and science. In the words of Paul Rand, ‘design is so simple, that’s why it’s so complicated.

In this article, we look at spaces that have been designed to aesthetically please a client, match an environment through careful selection of materials and also inspire you on interior design ideas for your home.

1. Natural Modern Home by Henkin Shavit Studio

The redesign of this project was spearheaded by Henkin Shavit Studio, the main concept was created around the idea of a retreat- more like a domestic have away from the city’s bustle.

The interior is treated as a box that wraps with the outer walls as an inner box and creates a feeling of detachment, gently using the element of wood partitioning.

The detachment concept is expressed between the connection and disconnection of an oak tree and grey stone. Warm timbers are found throughout the interior which creates a cocooning effect.

2. Opéra Garnier Duplex by Louis Denavaut

Louis Denavaut was contracted to renovate and decorate a duplex that is owned by two artists.

The apartment which is located between the Tuileries Garden and the Opera Garnier has a breath-taking view and sits atop the dome of Saint Roch Church on rue Saint-Honore.

The living room has a railing that was inspired by vintage ocean liners with sanded and varnished steel eyelets. The duplex also has an open kitchen that features a veined Pele de Tigre marble island from Portugal, an Okoume cabinet tinted with walnut stain and brushed stainless steel shelves.

The bathroom is fitted with an original Art Dew sink that is entirely all black and has a deep, custom-designed bathtub.

Sigal Baronowitz says the restaurant is a destiny fulfilled and it’s a space that was created to feel as if it has existed for centuries. Zozobra transcends its visitors into its fantastic realm which is inspired by the philosophy of Yin and Yang where contrary forces complement each other, are interdependent and exist through an inspiring synergy.

It also pays homage to Japanese design traditions and represents a meeting of East and West — ancient and modern.

The main feature of the design is an open-air glass atrium and is around all the spaces when the penthouse is oriented. The interior is characterised by a restrained material palette and is set as a background for the clients’ display of arts and artefacts from her travels.

The floors are made of creamy travertine mare Bianco and they feature radiant heating.

6. Balenciaga’s Berlin Store

The interior design of the fashion store situated in Berlin mixes elements from construction sites and abandoned spaces with more refined features.

Described as Raw Architecture, the interior features mirrored glass, grey curtains and aluminium shelves which cover the walls in front and between the aged concrete.

The floor of the store is covered in squared poured-concrete slabs that reflect the sidewalk paving outside. Thin metal clothes railings add a touch of delicacy and also underline the store’s industrial setting.

7. Penthouse II by Lawless and Meyerson

Penthouse II sits comfortably in Rose Bay which is one full-floor apartment and is part of a collective of similar scaled homes.

Based on the clients’ taste and frequent work travels, stones are used extensively which gives a quiet sophistication of a muted and complementary palette binds and in return gives the penthouse a European aesthetic.
